When a prospective pastor isÌýevaluated, church membersÌýwouldn't think about extending aÌýcall without first hearing theÌýcandidate preach. When churchÌýmembers discuss the strengthsÌýand weaknesses of pastors, theÌýtypical first criteria is theirÌýpreaching skill. Preaching isÌýobviously an important part ofÌýany pastor's ministry. So, can aÌýpastor become a better preacher?ÌýIs there a correlation betweenÌýtime in preparation and qualityÌýof presentation?

Ìý ÌýGoodÌýpreaching, of course, depends onÌýa number of factors. But I haveÌýfound that the best of preachersÌýspend a minimum of fifteenÌýhours each week in sermonÌýpreparation.ÌýThere are four broadÌýingredients in a successfulÌýsermon: 1) exegeting the biblicalÌýtext to determine what God isÌýsaying, 2) identifying the topicÌýand the issues that connect withÌýthe people in the congregation,Ìý3) organizing the content in aÌýlogical way that hearers willÌýunderstand and remember, and 4)Ìýpresenting the message in anÌýengaging and persuasive manner.

Ìý ÌýTaking these things intoÌýconsideration, as a rule a pastorÌýshould spend at least fifteenÌýhours each week in sermonÌýpreparation divided over at leastÌýtwo weeks. In the first week theÌýpastor spends about seven toÌýeight hours exegeting theÌýpassage(s) of scripture in order to understand it. The big idea or eternal principle is defined, and aÌýtentative outline is laid out.ÌýMany pastors will then let theÌýmessage percolate for a week ofÌýprayerful reflection. TheÌýfollowing week, an additionalÌýseven to eight hours are given toÌýfilling out the outline withÌýillustrations, stories,Ìýtestimonies, and other didacticÌýtechniques. Practicing theÌýdelivery is also a good idea.

Ìý ÌýOther factors, of course, affect how a pastorÌýprepares his/her sermon. Experience has a majorÌýimpact on the time necessary to prepare aÌýsermon, with younger pastors typically takingÌýlonger, and more experienced pastors needing lessÌýtime. The genre being preached affectsÌýpreparation time. Is the message from a Psalm orÌýa passage in Revelation? Some parts of the BibleÌýare just easier to get a handle on, and thus takeÌýless time to develop. But regardless of the topic,Ìýtime, or context, Paul told the church at Corinth,Ìýthat while the Jews demanded signs and theÌýGreeks wanted wisdom, “…we preach ChristÌýcrucifiedâ€ (I Cor. 1:23).

Ìý ÌýThe steps to put this rule into practice are fairlyÌýobvious. First, look back over the last threeÌýmonths and determine how much time youÌýcurrently put into sermon preparation. If it isÌýmore than fifteen hours, you are doing well.ÌýHowever, if it is substantially less than fifteenÌýhours, you may not be doing the best job of whichÌýyou are capable.

Ìý ÌýTry splitting your sermon preparation time inÌýtwo halves. In the first week, spend time justÌýunderstanding the passage. Do quality exegesis ofÌýthe passage. Take time to think and pray aboutÌýhow the eternal principles impact the lives of yourÌýpeople. In the second week, refine your outline,Ìýadd illustrations that connect to your people.ÌýWrite out the sermon. Practice preaching it atÌýleast three times out aloud, so that God is mostÌýable to speak to the hearts and minds of yourÌýpeople.
